I first met Jin Xi Cheong, the founder and CEO of Poladrone during a mentorship session at Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) less than a year ago.
I was invited by my ex-colleague from MaGIC, Rizal Zainuddin as a Smart City mentor and subject matter expert for their award-winning Global Accelerator Program (GAP).
Jin Xi said he was looking to relocate and was searching for a new location for his drone startup. He showed me his pitching deck and I was impressed with what they’re doing. He also wanted to setup Asia’s first Drone Academy to train and certify people to fly drones.
When Jin Xi presented to me, I sensed all the Silicon Valley’s entrepreneurs traits and quality he possessed. His pitch deck was well crafted and he truly knows his product and all the offerings. He knew what he wanted and sent me a follow up email immediately with a customised deck for Cyberview.
I mentioned to him that our company Cyberview has setup a new subsidiary called Futurise and his drone startup and his plans to setup the Asia Drone Academy will fit perfectly for his business and operations in Cyberjaya. So I reached out to my colleagues at Futurise.
Fast forward to today, Jin Xi is one of the 11 Malaysians who have been listed in Forbes 30 Under 30 in Asia for 2019. Forbes said the group of young stars were chosen from over 2,000 entries, heavily researched by a team of reporters and vetted by an A-list of judges for their work in technological innovations and disrupting age-old industries, among others.
His drone academy is up and running and they have trained and certified drone pilots from various industries. My colleagues at Futurise have also been working hard to work with the authorities to deregulate the airspace around the MaGIC campus in Cyberjaya for drone activities and testing.
There’s definitely no lack of talent in Malaysia and I’m glad that Poladrone has chosen to be based in Cyberjaya as part of Malaysia’s vibrant tech ecosystem and contributing to Malaysia’s future economy.
Congratulations to Jin Xi and his team and all the other Malaysians who have made to that list.
Jin Xi Cheong is the founder of Poladrone, a company which took the drone to the palm oil industry to boost the efficiency in Malaysian palm oil plantations and crop farms.
